Beware power grab, tax shift, loss of services if Amendment 3 passes
The proposed Amendment 3 that will appear on our November ballots would provide a reduction in the property tax of homesteaded homeowners, so at first glance it might appear attractive.
In fact, the amendment is a scam that would reduce services and create a threat to public safety. It would further shift power to politicians in Tallahassee with little knowledge or interest in our local concerns. It also would undermine home rule.
The inevitable result would be yet another transfer of wealth and power to those who are already wealthy at the expense of everyone else…If Amendment 3 passes, cash-strapped local government would find itself at the mercy of Tallahassee politicians under the influence of development interests, many from outside our state.
Anyone who is concerned with overdevelopment in Martin County and with the cleanliness of our river should reject this ill-considered measure.
