Sarasota County braces for impact of Florida property tax change vote

By Michaela Galligan

Sarasota County officials told the Herald-Tribune that a $250,000 homestead exemption in Fiscal Year 2029 is estimated to reduce Sarasota County’s property tax revenues by $87 million.

Based on the 2026 budget, after paying the funds for constitutional officers, Boards, other agencies, mandated services, nondiscretionary and debt costs, Sarasota County has $92,911,787 left to spend on general government services.

If the $87,000,000 is removed from the $92,911,787, general governmental services will have $5,911,787 for the entire fiscal year. For reference, the Sarasota County Library System requires $22 million annually to fund its 10 libraries.
